One day at a time

It has been some time when a song last touched me to my soul. Days ago my Spotify subscription expired. I need to deal with the free version where I cannot choose what would play next.

I was on my way home from work. Tired and kinda lost. Lost on different aspects. Tired of overthinking.

Then voila! One day at a time by Sam Smith played. I was surprised because it was my first time to hear the song. This song is from his album “The thrill of it all”. It was like the time stopped. I was in a trance. The song finished and I was still speechless. The song spoke to me in a personal level. It gave words to my thoughts.

Because I was not on premium I have no choice to repeat the song. I played it on youtube instead. I stumbled on a live version. Sam Smith explained that he wrote this song for his friends whom he really missed. He spent/waste so much time thinking of the person who broke his heart and forgot his friend and family.

A love song for his friends. What an amazing idea

The lyrics was pure love put into words. The first few lines made me so melancholic. It also made me contemplate on things

“Let’s turn off our phones tonight, and rely on the starts, we’ve been so lost lately, we forgot who we are”

When was the last time you brought your phone down and just enjoyed the company of the people who mattered to you the most? Wether is is because of social media or work, it seems like we spend a lot of our time going through our phones. Leaving us clueless of how beautiful the world around us is. We are missing the chance of engaging in conversations that has true feelings. In conversations that has heart.

I have been so pre occupied lately about career, about prioritising things and the reaction of people around me. I forgot who I am, what I really want. I forgot that I do not need to be validated by everyone. I forgot that I am doing well. I forgot one of the most valuable lessons that I have learned. To take it ONE DAY AT A TIME.

Most of the time we become so giddy to do things and to advance in life. We bite more than what we can chew. And that is when we choke on our goals. We need to take it slowly. We need to enjoy and feel the process. This may frustrate us at some point but in the end we will be surprised that we learned more than what we expect.

In totality this song tells us how important it is for us to keep the people who first believed in us. The people who saw us at our worst, who celebrated us at our best. This song also tells us that when life becomes complicated all we need to do is to sit down and relax. It will help us to think clearly.

Another line that made mark in me is the line

“I know you’re feeling weighed down tonight
And you can’t find the breaks
Every day is too long for you
You were sworn to your fate
But we got everything we need, baby
In the memories we make
In a world of reinventions
It’s never too late”

it is telling us to use the best memories to help us get up. To be back on track, so that we can create more memories that we can use whenever moments like these arise in the future.

I never knew that a song can make me think this deep. I never knew that a song could make me realise what I was missing. Songs are really therapeutic.

I do hope you also get the chance to listen to this amazing song.

Always remember “TAKE IT ONE DAY AT A TIME”
