A Christmas Story
The most wonderful time of the year. Everyone is lightened up by the thought that there will be abundant food. Gifts that would be opened. Loved ones to celebrate with.
But, what if it would be the complete opposite? What if there would be no food on the table? What if there would be no gifts to be opened. What if there is no family for your to share the season with?
Would you still consider it as the most wonderful time of the year?
Our country celebrates Christmas the longest, we do it so extra. Why not? it is for our Lord Jesus. However, is the usual Christmas extravagance true for all? I am sure that it is not. I have felt it once before. And it was an eye opener for me. Our usual table that once was filled with food was then almost empty.
It was the first time that we do not have anything prepared. We do not have new clothes or gifts. The only food we have on the table was the food given by my aunt and our neighbors. I was devastated to witness it. To see my mom so down because she prepares the best Christmas feast. And now she can't even serve us anything.
As cliche' as it sounds but the reason why we survived that night is that we have each other. I never knew how true it is until it happened to me. It was the love. The presence of each other, that became my inner voice telling me that no matter what, I'll never leave this family especially on a Christmas Eve. I'll make sure that I have gifts for them from then on because as long as I am alive I'll make sure that they would never be empty handed.
I'll always have it in my heart the lesson that I have learned from one of our beloved priests. He told us once in his mass that when our lives is in chaos during the Christmas season we are being blessed. We are being given the chance to feel what it truly is during the first Christmas.
During the first Christmas the world was in chaos. Kids are being killed that is why Mary and Joseph flew away to save Jesus. No one accepted them even just for a night. The Lord was born in the manger. Nothing fancy. JUST LOVE. Love from the mother who said yes to take the biggest task of being the Lord's mother even she has no clue. Love from his father who tirelessly guided them to Bethlehem. It was LOVE that made everything possible.
Knowing the Christmas story makes it even stronger in my heart that family must be our priority during this season. It was because of the love of a mother and a father that we celebrate this day
Having the gifts and the food makes the season more memorable. But I do hope that it is the love that makes us excited about this season. Because it was love that made Christmas happen.
Be with your families. They need you to be with them on Christmas more than ever.
Merry Christmas.
